I accidentally pushed Fuji Neopan Acros 100 to 160 and now I'm looking for the best timing to develop it in Xtol. I check the Massive Dev Chart but there isn't any information about pushing to 160. Thanks :)

I haven’t used Xtol, but I’ll give you a rule of thumb that I use for OVERexposure all the time: each stop of overexposure is roughly equivalent to a 20% reduction in development time. So, I would say you could probably increase development by 15-20% and get reasonable negatives.

Another thing to try: determine the percentage increase by analyzing dev times suggested by MDC for underexposure using other chems and come up with a number that way, too (just assuming that the numbers would probably apply to Xtol, too).

That being said, if you’re scanning, you could probably get away with just a normal development time and then adjust in post. Your negs won’t be very dense, and they’ll be easy to scan. Perhaps you’ll lose some shadows.

I had a similar situation to yours once. I actually mis-metered a few shots by doing incident metering, with the meter set for reflective. I realized a few frames later I’d been underexposing my shots by about a stop. So I underexposed the rest of the roll and developed my film in Diafine, which has a roughly one-stop speed gain. The negs came out great.

Hello! I noticed that you use both the contax g2 and fuji ga645. How big is the difference between the fuji and the 45mm planar in quality? If the images would be uploaded just to flickr. Not printed. Would the medium format still have a noticeable edge over the g2? How bout if I would use 100 iso film in g2 and 400 in fuji? Would the fuji still be better? Big thanks if you have time to answer since I'm trying to figure out if there would be point in getting fuji to go along my g2.

The Fuji has a very good narrow-range zoom lens. I haven’t seen tests, but it is probably in the ballpark of the legendary Zeiss 45mm for the Contax. Honestly, I don’t think you would see differences in the photos due to the lenses.

You’d more likely see differences due to the negative size: medium format requires lower magnification for a given size. I think a medium format image (even as small as 645) always has technical merits over a 35mm image. I find that MF generally has a different “look” to it resulting from a) smoother tones and b) interesting contrasts between in-focus and out-of-focus areas due to the usually shallower DoF found in medium format due to longer lenses. Of course, the latter isn’t true if you shoot with small apertures, but in general, it’s been my observation.

The Fuji will still look better (by some measure of “better”) at 400 than the G2 at 100, IMO. Whether it’s worth it is for you to decide.

Check out my flickr stream (reachable from my “about” page) and do searches on Contax G2 and Fuji GA645zi and see what you think.

Hope that helps!

dirty bird on Flickr.Via Flickr:

This shot was purposely overexposed by one stop and compensated in development. Check it out — a bright white scene shot in full, direct, sunlight and overexposed by one stop. Digital would have clipped something awful, I think.

disintegration on Flickr.Via Flickr:

This picture is #23 in my 100 strangers project . Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page.

Joseph and his buddy Aaron were hanging out in front of Reiver’s Bar and Grill on Old South Gaylord Street in Denver. They were taking a smoke break from watching the Broncos play. I passed them once, and took note of them as good stranger candidates. On passing them again, I asked if they’d be willing to pose for the 100 strangers project. They immediately agreed.

Joseph started the conversation with something like, “but first, tell me why you’re shooting with the world’s oldest camera” :-). So I explained the Hasselblad thing (great photos). Turns out Joseph used to shoot a Pentax 35mm and film in days past, so he knew a bit about photography.

Joseph next commented that he only agreed to pose because of my shirt. I was wearing my “Arkham Press” T-shirt, which identifies me as an HP Lovecraft geek. He was into it because of the “Arkham” name’s relationship to Batman (his bud Aaron turned out to be a bit of a Lovecraft fan, though).

Anyway, I snapped my usual quick, single, shots, and here we are. This photo, IMO, demonstrates why to shoot medium format film. Joseph looks very life-like in this shot and the tones are smooth. There’s kind of a 3-D effect going on.

Technical Notes
This was shot on Tri-X that I was exposing at EI 200. The exposure was about 1/125 and f/4. Tough conditions today, due to one side of the street being in full sun coming from a low angle and the other in open shade. Before I started, I took a reading on the sunny side, and on the shady side. There was a four-stop difference, at least! I basically just walked the block on each side of the street. As I switched sides I’d change the shutter speed to match: 1/125 in shade 1/1000 in sun. Being able to shoot up to 1/2000 second is one reason to shoot a focal-plane Hasselblad, even one that has a beat-up shutter and light leaks.

This was shot on the shady side with the sunny side in the background. My habit of shooting at half box speed on sunny days (then under-developing) sometimes bites me when my subject is in low-contrast light, as is Joseph here. I was able to adjust the photo to my liking, but it probably would have been better at box speed and normal development (see other photos from this day (nos. 24, 25, 26), which were in full sun, to see how well this technique works in contrasty light).

1963 Imperial on Flickr.Via Flickr:

I know, I know, pushingfilm is all about, well, pushing film. So shoot me!

Yes, I got a Leica Monochrom. Well, no, not really. I rented it :-).

I ordered it for a four-day rental with delivery on Christmas Eve, and it actually showed up today. According to my receipt, the return date is still the 28th, so major score! An extra three days with this thing.

Glad I kept my M lenses, and extra glad I kept the Leica half-case — I definitely don’t want this thing getting damaged!

geese at cherry knolls park on Flickr.Via Flickr:

Decided to crack open some of the FP3000B I’ve had in the fridge forever. I really like the looks of this film, though I really wish they’d continued the 100 speed B&W — I only got to shoot one pack of it.
